writing & directing
I write and direct for film, television, and theater; and I direct on-camera content for socially conscious companies and organizations.
With my writing partner Erik, I adapted and directed the feature film ALMOST HOME, based on my novel of the same name (Hyperion, 2018), and we're developing our play HOW TO BE A ROCK CRITIC for feature film with Likely Story (we'll also direct).
For TV, we wrote the pilot THE NEGOTIATOR for Gaumont Studios (EP Tom Fontana) and we've written and developed with Fox 21 Television Studios, 20th Century Fox TV, Avenue Pictures, Sunswept Entertainment, Virgin Produced, and Radical Media.
As playwrights, we're authors of THE EXONERATED, a play based on interviews we conducted with over 40 wrongly convicted death row inmates across the US (Lortel, Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk, Ovation, Fringe First and Herald Angel Awards; awards from Amnesty International, the American Bar Association, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Death Penalty Focus, and Court TV). THE EXONERATED has been translated into Spanish, French, Japanese, Farsi, and Mandarin, and produced at over 250 theaters across the US and around the world. In 2005, we adapted THE EXONERATED into an award-winning movie starring Susan Sarandon, Danny Glover, Brian Dennehy, Aidan Quinn and Delroy Lindo. In 2008, we traveled to Jordan on a grant from the Ford Foundation to interview Iraqi civilian refugees for our next play, AFTERMATH, which I directed Off-Broadway at New York Theater Workshop (2 Drama League noms) and which toured internationally for two years. Our play HOW TO BE A ROCK CRITIC (based on the writing of Lester Bangs) was developed at La Jolla Playhouse, the Public Theater, and CTG; I've directed productions at the Kirk Douglas Theater, South Coast Rep, Steppenwolf Theatre, ArtsEmerson, and Off-Broadway at the Public Theater, and it's in development for feature film. Our next documentary play, COAL COUNTRY, about the 2010 Upper Big Branch Mine Disaster, will premiere at the Public Theater in 2020; I’m directing, with original music written and performed by Grammy Award-winning musician Steve Earle.
I also co-wrote the solo play LIBERTY CITY with actor/writer April Yvette Thompson, and directed it Off-Broadway at New York Theater Workshop and the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami (Lortel, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations). I teach story structure in the Graduate Drama Department at the Juilliard School, and in the NYU/Tisch Graduate Film Program. I love collaborating as a director with writers, changemakers, and performers, and I'm active as a theater director Off-Broadway and an on-camera content director for socially conscious companies and organizations.
